In love, Daniel was an exemplary partner who adored and was adored by his wife.

In his work, he was an innovative, self-taught web developer and technologist who changed the course of several companies in Baltimore and Richmond and beyond.

In life, Daniel was an adventurer; he was an avid rock climber, backpacker, and whitewater kayaker.

In community, he sought first to understand and believed in reconciliation over retaliation for himself, for his family, and for our shared world.

Daniel is remembered as a passionate mentor who believed in our power to make this planet a better place. He was kindness incarnate and truly the pacifist you’d most like on your side in a fight.

How to share your stories

Daniel’s family has asked that you honor his life by sharing stories of remembrance with each other. There are a few ways in which this will take place on Saturday and beyond; please think about which ways of sharing will be the most meaningful for you and for those gathered.

  • Submit a memory, story, or reflection to a permanent, public web page that is being developed to remember and pay tribute to Daniel’s life and legacy. What will you take from Daniel that you will live out to honor his memory? How has he changed your life?
  • Sign up in advance to offer a brief (2-3 minute) public tribute to Daniel as a part of the open Eulogy at his service of remembrance.  ***This is not guaranteed, but will be based on the amount of time we have**** Please note that these should be short remembrances of Daniel’s life and, in a spirit of inclusion, should focus on Daniel rather than on any particular religious traditions, prayers or beliefs of those speaking
  • There will also be a place at Daniel’s service where you can write or audio record these memories and continue to share other stories and tributes informally after the public Eulogy.
  • Share your stories with each other over food and drink on Saturday

Ways to give

If you would like to give a gift in Daniel’s name, please consider these three avenues. Please be sure to write a note that these gifts are in memoriam so the family can be aware.

Financial care for his surviving partner:

Daniel asked that our community help to take care of his partner after he was gone. If you are able, please consider lessening the financial burden for Kimberly.

Mark Van Steenwyk and the Center for Prophetic Imagination:

The Center for Prophetic Imagination integrates spiritual formation, creative political action, and experimental education to nurture and guide leaders that call people out of empire to embrace God’s vision for the world… We are working to live in a world where all walls of alienation are torn down and all people live justly with each other, with the land, and with the Spirit of Life.

Christian Peacemaker Teams:

Partnering with nonviolent movements around the world, CPT seeks to embody an inclusive, ecumenical and diverse community of God’s love…CPT understands violence to be rooted in systemic structures of oppression. We are committed to undoing oppressions, starting within our own lives and in the practices of our organization.
